Podcast Studio Rental: What To Expect

With over 2,000,000 unique podcasts and over 48 million episodes, podcasting is a fast growing medium for businesses, thought leaders, authors, creators, and anyone with a passion for sharing their perspective with the world. For those of us who aren’t interested in building our own professional set up, a podcast studio rental may be the right choice.

If you’re considering taking your podcasting game to the next level and don’t want to build your own setup, we’ve put together this guide to help know what to expect with renting space at our Pittsburgh podcast studio.

How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Podcast Studio?

According to some estimates, it can take $4,000 or more to build your own professional audio studio. The high price tag for the high quality cost turns many podcasters to renting.

At some rental studios, a one hour rental is $100, a 30 minute rental is $60, and a 2 hour rental is $165. We have lower rates at our Pittsburgh studio.

Podcast Studio Rental Rates in Pittsburgh

Fortunately, things are a little more cost effective in Pittsburgh. At StudioME, our podcast studio rental rates start at $45 per hour or $399 to book the entire day. The cost can go up from there if you’d like to add on things like a professional assistant (more on that below), but many of our podcasters will be well-served by the $45 hourly rate. You can book our podcast lounge here if you’re interested in getting started, or read on below for more information.

What is Included With a Podcast Studio Rental?

For the $45 hourly rate you get audio capture from our professional equipment and digital transfer of your raw audio files. You can use up to 4 podcast microphones. If you need them, we have a variety of grip equipment available in our studios (clamps, apple boxes, sandbags, etc), which we distribute on a first-come, first-served basis.

You can also add a live streaming service (video conferencing, Facebook Live, YouTube, Vimeo, or RTMP streams) for no additional charge.

For those who will be podcasting regularly, we offer reduced rates with our membership program.

What Extras Are Available With a Podcast Studio Rental?

At StudioME, we have 4 add-ons at our Pittsburgh studio rental that some of our podcasters use:

  • A 3 camera setup for video controlled and recorded from an iPad for an additional $30
  • An additional 2 mics (which makes for 6 total) for an additional $10
  • Podcast editing, for which we’d give you a custom quote
  • A professional assistant (recommended if you’re recording video) for an additional $45.

For the last of those, we have a bit more information below.

Do I Get A Podcast Assistant With Podcast Studio Rental?

If it’s your first time with us, our studio manager will give you a brief tour of the room and answer any specific questions that you have. There’s no additional charge for this. The podcast lounge requires no prior media knowledge and our podcasters get up to speed in less than 10 minutes of training.

If you’d like an assistant while you record, that is available for an additional fee of $45 as outlined above. Just check the box to “Add Professional Assistant” to add on to your purchase when you book your rental online.

What Does the Studio Space Look Like?

The podcast lounge is a 12’ x 19’ room, or 228 sq. feet. We’ve set it up for maximum customization options, and there is plenty of space for producers or videographers to bring in any of their extra gear they may want to bring with them. For the video podcasters out there, the podcast lounge rental comes with its own dressing room.

The spacious setup accommodates a podcast of up to 6 people.

How Do Podcasters Make Money?

The most common way for podcasters to make money is through sponsorships. You’ll hear the sponsors get plugged once or more throughout the course of most podcasts you listen to. The general range for pricing is between $18 – $50 CPM where CPM means “cost per thousand impressions.” So if you plan to build a podcast with 10,000 listeners (possible impressions) and charge a $50 CPM for sponsors, you’d get $500 ($50 CPM * 10) per sponsor per episode.

But of course, it’s no small feat to build a podcast to 10,000 listeners. That’s why a lot of podcasters use their podcast to help build the brand of some other organization or business venture they are a part of. In that way, a podcast can help to attract new clients and customers and can be ROI positive even without any direct revenue from sponsors.
